Course Description

By the end of this course, participants will be able to describe global, national, and local trends related to HIV/AIDS, discuss developments in prevention, testing and treatment, and identify issues for persons dealing with substance use and HIV. This course reviews the latest statistical information related to HIV/AIDS from the World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control, and Texas Department of State Health Services. Trends are examined in the larger context of health disparities currently impacting communities. Advantages and challenges related to new methods of prevention and advancements in testing and treatment are discussed. Finally, this training takes a special look at the connections between HIV and substance use, and considers approaches for those clients struggling with the diseases of HIV/AIDS and addiction.

CEU Credit
3 Alcohol & Drug - Related credits will be provided for participants who complete the entire training. However, no partial credit will be given for incomplete courses. Certificates of Completion will be awarded to participants at the end of the training. Course Description

By the end of this course, participants will be able to describe the basic functions of a healthy liver and the important role it plays in our lives, and be able to define Hepatitis and Hepatitis C. They will also be able to exhibit increased knowledge and comprehension of the Hepatitis C disease process, transmission routes, testing, treatment, and prevention. Finally, participants will be able to explain how substance use affects a person with Hepatitis C, and identify the connection between HIV and Hepatitis C. This training also offers a basic overview of the other Hepatitis viruses, and includes ways to advocate for clients who have Hepatitis C.

CEU Credit

Keepin' It REAL (KIR)
The keepin’ it REAL (Refuse, Explain, Avoid, Leave) program is a video-enhanced intervention that uses a culturally-grounded resiliency model which incorporates traditional ethnic values and practices that protect against drug use. A school-based prevention program for elementary, middle, and early high school students 10 through 17 years of age, keepin’ it REAL is based on previous work that demonstrates that teaching communication and life skills can combat negative peer and other influences. keepin’ it REAL extends resistance and life-skills models by using a culturally-based narrative and performance framework to:
Enhance anti-drug norms and attitudes
Facilitate the development of risk assessment, decision-making, and resistance skills
keepin’ it REAL utilizes a 10-lesson classroom curriculum accompanied by a collection of five videos that demonstrate resistance strategies and illustrate the skills taught in the lessons.

The Strengthening Families Program (SFP) involves elementary school-aged children (6 to 11 and 12 to 16 years old) and their families in family skills training sessions. SFP uses family systems and cognitive-behavioral approaches to increase resilience and reduce risk factors for behavioral, emotional, academic, and social problems. It builds on protective factors by:

*Improving family relationships
*Improving parenting skills
*Increasing the youth’s social and life skills

SFP offers incentives for attendance, good behavior in children, and homework completion to increase program recruitment and participation.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to define chemical
dependency/addiction, identify the approaches and goals of treatment, and define
recovery. They will also be able to identify the stages of change and stages in the
developmental model of recovery and define relapse based upon these models.
Participants will be able to define relapse prevention and identify principles to help
clients avoid relapse, and recognize the intersection between relapse and HIV. Finally,
participants will be able to apply basic counseling skills in order to work with clients in
various stages of recovery to avoid relapse.

Peers Making Peace: Positive Action Center training is 6 hours in duration and covers the following areas: One-to-one mentoring skills, Active Listening, Basic Human Behavior, Problem Identification, Problem Solving, How to Develop a Resolution Plan, Plan Implementation, and Follow-up. The goals of PAC are: reduce the number of student referrals to ISS and AEP; reduce violence and alcohol and drug use; and, improve decision making, communication, problem solving, listening, resiliency, and school bonding among high-risk youth. Upon completion of this training, trained peer mentors will work with high risk students who have been referred to In School Suspension (ISS) or the districts Alternative Education Program (AEP). These individuals are at the greatest risk of academic failure and for developing mental health problems or having their current mental health problems, diagnosed or undiagnosed, progress to a more dysfunctional state. PAC was designed to provide an opportunity to enhance the skills of the trained mediators and create additional school resources for high risk students.
